A safe test load can save a vintage amplifier—and the workshop speakers—from an avoidable surprise. In a video published 16 October 2026, The Retro Channel turns an inexpensive two-way speaker-switch box into a selectable 8-ohm dummy load for bench testing.
The build adds two 100-watt power resistors to the box and changes how its switches are used, so the receiver can be tested against a load or connected to speakers. The video walks through mounting the resistors, checking the switch contacts, and trying the finished box with a Cambridge Audio receiver. That last test also exposes a separate problem with the receiver; the box is a diagnostic aid, not a repair in itself.
The practical point for retro-audio repairers is separation: a resistive load lets a suspect output stage be checked before putting real speakers in circuit. The advertised resistor wattage is a component rating, not proof that this compact enclosure can dissipate 100 watts continuously; heat and wiring still matter.
